Hollywood Forever’s 16th Annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration takes it visual, cultural, and spiritual inspiration from the Huichol of Western Mexico in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Said to be one of the last tribes in North America to have maintained their pre-Colombian traditions, the Huichol guide us this year to the elemental pre-Christian roots at the heart of the ancient Dia de Los Muertos tradition. Shamanism is a way of life for the Huichol. Devoted to their ancient traditions and protected from cultural intrusion by their remote mountainous territories – Huichol shamans and healers practice today as they have for thousands of years. Their psychedelic artwork of brightly colored beads and yarn map out their shamanic vision quests and speaks the language of the gods. The Huichol refer to themselves as Wikarika: “the Healing People”. At the core of their Shamanism is the magic of living in harmony with nature and all of creation – with the Shamans mediating between the world of the living and the cosmology of the gods and the spirits. Guided by visiting Huichol Shamans, Artists, Healers, and Performers – Hollywood Forever is honored to invite you to experience the Shamanic Visions of the Huichol.
