Former Bravo executive and show host Andy Cohen with Ricky Martin in an episode of "Watch What Happens Live" (Bravo TV)
Let’s discuss Bravo TV, the reigning network for reality that former executive Andy Cohen managed to transform. Once a small independent channel that featured art house films, dance/music performances and international work is now the go-to for pop culture.
In 2003, Bravo figured out a way to re-work the channel and do a complete makeover, which included the groundbreaking show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” This show led to hit after hit like “Project Runway,” “The Real Housewives” franchise, “Top Chef” and “Flipping Out.”
Cohen, Bravo’s former head of development, worked hard to make the network relevant. He stepped down last year to remain host of his popular late-night show “Watch What Happens Live” and to pitch pilots from his own production company.
He remains an executive producer of the “Housewives” franchise and the “face” of Bravo, but in a different capacity.
With new shows cropping up every month, along with the tried and true, Bravo is not slowing down. “The People’s Couch” is one of their latest programs and simply is about people watching different series each week and commenting on them. Sounds boring right? Wrong! This is one of the most creative and hilarious shows out there. Bravo manages to compile all the hot shows, both scripted and reality, have a camera on the people watching and let them just talk freely. Give this show a go.
Breakout stars are also made from their reality shows. NeNe Leakes, the infamous Real Housewife of Atlanta has gone on to acting in “The New Normal” and “Glee.” Ryan Murphy, creator behind those shows, is clearly a fan of hers. Bethenny Frankel managed to create her Skinnygirl Margarita mix which sold to Jim Beam for millions, making her a legitimate millionaire. She also had her own talk show, “Bethenny,” which has since been cancelled.
There is a series for everyone on Bravo, from “Southern Charm” to “Married to Medicine.” The network is even hopping across the Atlantic for “Ladies of London.” People can’t seem to get enough of Bravo. If you aren’t already checking them out, why don’t you join in and watch their star continue to rise.
