Summer just got a little more exciting for fans of the popular reggae/pop band UB40. Known for hits like “Red Red Wine,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Food for Thought,” the band takes the stage at the Greek Theatre along with Matisyahu and Raging Fyah on July 6.
While the band garnered massive success over 30 years, it faced some changes in members throughout the years. However, fans can rest easy knowing they’ll be seeing Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue (the original UB40). Though they left the band at different times, the three reunited in 2014 to record the album, Silhouette.
Chances are, you’ve heard at least one of their songs in your lifetime, and if you haven’t, you’re missing out. Hailing from England, the band fused their own style of reggae and pop to achieve the perfect sound. With that, they had more than 70 million sales, four No. 1 singles (worldwide), multiple Grammy nominations and Top 10 Gold and Platinum selling albums.
Not only was the band diverse, so was their sound. Campbell’s legendary voice and the band’s melodic style are easily recognizable and unique, even 30 years after their debut.
Since reuniting, the trio have played in places like South Africa and Nigeria. And within a few weeks, they’ll be taking performing at the Greek Theatre.
Whether you’re a fan of ska, blues, reggae, or pop, UB40 will surely catch your ear. If you listen to their songs from decades ago, or watch them live, one thing you’ll notice is that no matter how much time has passed, the spirit of UB40 has not wavered. Perhaps it’s that strong will and complete love of the music that makes these three true pioneers of their genre.
Despite any legal issues with the other UB40, Campbell, Virtue and Astro are keeping their goal the same as it’s always been, to share reggae with others and to play good music.
Tickets for their all-ages concert range from $39.50-$79.50 (plus fees) and are on sale now. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
