BBQ brisket sliders at The Detour Bistro Bar in Culver City, Calif. (Sabina Ibarra/Living Out Loud LA)
Drives can be killer in L.A. on a workday especially on the westside of town.
Sometimes it’s good to just make a stop for a bite to wait out the traffic because it sure beats sitting on the highway getting angry. If you ever find yourself passing through Culver City, Calif., be sure to check out the latest addition to the town’s dining experience: The Detour Bistro Bar.
A concept by Ranni Kumgisky and Dane Peterson, who co-own Great Dane Catering and Events, the small intimate pit-stop esque vibe is a draw for taking a break from the road to grab a drink or something to eat to turn rush hour into happy hour.
Cocktails
Their Honey Old Fashioned is stiff enough to calm you but has a smooth and sweet finish. Another great cocktail that they have is the Diablo, which looks beautiful and pink but is a misleading surprise as the tequila and mixers deliver a taste that is both chilly and spicy. For something more tame try the Summer Splash, which is sweet and a bit sour with fruity notes.
They also boast a great selection of wines that pair fantastically with their meal options.
If just a bite to eat is what you’re feeling, they offer a great array of entrees. Up for a flatbread? Try the yam and brie; it’s a not so guilty pleasure that is soft on the palate and melts in your mouth.
If you’re a meat kinda person, there is an awesome sandwich called the Cubano that has crispy fried chicken, ham, cheese, mustard and pickles. So good!
Then there is the brisket sandwich which makes a bold combination choice of BBQ and some ginger to bring out a sharp tangy-ness. Such bite!
Want a meal? Try the mushroom risotto which is a delectable plate with Shiitake and Crimini mushrooms, peas and yummy truffle oil. Truffle makes everything better.
Cubano sandwich
And oh yes, there is dessert with homemade, fresh out the oven cookies and tiramisu ice cream for that sweet tooth. Both are delicious!
They offer not only small bites during happy hour and lunch but an extensive menu for dinner and even brunch with options like omelettes, multiple eggs benedict plates, and french toast.
The location of the spot is great to join at anytime, the ambiance is relaxed and gives off the laid back feel of the city east of 405 freeway and south of the 10 freeway.
