It’s always fun when the Show of the Week just happens to feature local talent. This week, we’ve got a local band that’s lately been touring worldwide. It’s three sisters from the Valley that named their group after their last name. That’s right, I’m talking about Haim. They’re playing two shows at the Wiltern this week: one on Thursday and one on Friday.
People throw all kinds of labels on their music including folk, electro, R&B, funk, blah blah blah. It’s just rock ‘n’ roll. That’s all they do. Their music is catchy and still, edgy. Not to mention the fact that their performances are executed with a signature level of precision that shows in a lot of different ways, from overall sound to the finer points of stage presence.
There’s something that feels like home at a Haim show. Maybe it’s the fact that good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll seems extraordinary against the kaleidoscopic backdrop of musical genres that are out there today. Maybe it’s the fact that the Haim sisters remind me of every girl that I know from Santa Monica with their new-age heroine chic and their throwback punk-rock attitudes.
This weekend’s performances will especially feel like home since the band is at their home. A place like the Wiltern is a perfect spot for them, too. It’s an old L.A. venue, intimate and yet still big enough to host a national act … although now that I’m looking at ticket prices, maybe the Wiltern wasn’t such a good choice after all.
On the cheap side right now, tickets are at around $50 for the nosebleeds. Floor tickets are running for two-hundred twenty-three freaking dollars. So yeah, this is an expensive show.
It’s still the best show in town this week, though. So maybe skim through that Rolodex and see if you know someone that can help get you in. Maybe next time they stop through town, Haim will pick a venue that’s a bit more economical.
