The prospect of an intimate XXYYXX set at the Echoplex might be the only thing to get you out on a Thursday night.
I’ve got something good for you this week, but it’s gonna happen on Thursday night, so you’d better start making plans. The Florida-based DJ Marcel Everett, known by the stage name XXYYXX, is doing a show at the Echoplex for 16 bucks.
Everett’s a young DJ with a lot of hype getting attached to his act. He stands out from a lot of DJs now, fusing techno with contemporary hip hop, R&B and (t)rap. The song selection for an XXYYXX set is groovy and rhythmic; entrancing, yet dancy.
His recent sets are particularly eclectic with shades of Bonobo or even Four Tet. He’s hard to put a finger on. At one point, Everett had described his own music as ‘doing drugs on a freeway … underwater.’ Which I suppose is really the best way to describe it.
However hard his sound is to articulate, it’s fun music to be around, and you can tell that Everett has a sense of humor. His Soundcloud page for example, is packed with all kinds of silly and sarcastic nonsense.
It’s intelligent music, put together by an intelligent musician who is clearly way beyond his years. His whole act is stylish and brandishes a certain mystique about it. He’s the type of guy that it’s OK to be jealous of, because you can just admit that he is way cooler than you and I are ever going to be.
More to the point, the other thing that’s interesting to note is that this performance occurs right after the announcement of the FYF lineup. XXYYXX is scheduled for a set time on Saturday. The hype surrounding that announcement is going to add a lot of energy to the room on Thursday night. You’re basically watching this kid as he gets his chance to blow up. Unless of course the show sucks, which I’m pretty sure it won’t.
XXYYXX performs May 22 at the Echoplex, located at 1822 W. Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. Tickets are $16.
