Singer Gloria Trevi was once considered the Mexican Madonna, but despite the often outrageous and salacious stories concerning the Material Girl, nothing in her life has ever come close to the drama surrounding her Latin-American counterpart. Despite her reputation for being sexually provocative, Madonna is ultimately a hard-working taskmaster who spends her time dieting, exercising and raising her surprisingly well-behaved children, while gyrating on stage and singing about sex.

The only reason preventing Trevi from being the subject of a telenovela, in contrast, is that she actually stars in one. Her story contains enough lurid details to fill a soap opera, including charges of running a sex cult, prison time and a paternity scandal, all in the midst of a successful career as a pop diva.

The biopic Gloria covers all of the scandals of the pop singer’s career, in a manner so scandalous that Trevi became disenchanted by the portrayal of her and withdrew support before filming. Sofía Espinosa plays the title role, while Marco Perez plays Sergio Andrade, Trevi’s manager, boyfriend and possible parent of the child she delivered while in prison. In keeping with the tabloid-ready events of Trevi’s life, she claims that the DNA evidence taken in prison proving that Andrade is the father was doctored by authorities.

This is but a taste of the excitement behind the life of Trevi, who spent four years in prison under charges that she operated a sex cult along with Andrade. Further tales regarding the singer allege that her prison-born child was either the product of rape by prison guards or, amazingly enough, through a mobster’s sperm smuggled into the prison bagged in warm milk.

The life of Trevi thus gives Gloria ample material to fill a biopic, while making the antics of America’s pop stars look tame in comparison. Miley Cyrus may stick out her tongue and strip down to her underwear, and Lady Gaga may attend awards shows wearing anything Björk rejects as too outré, but Gloria Trevi had a miracle pregnancy with questionable paternity while in prison. Not even Madonna, ironically enough, could manage that.

Gloria is available now on DVD and Digital HD.
