The SESAC Latina Music Awards were presented last night at the historic Beverly Hills Hotel and bestowed top honors on Ariel Barreras for Songwriter of the Year and for Song of the Year for his hit “Llamada De Mi Ex” as recorded by La Arrolladora Banda El Limon de Rene Camacho and published by FERCA Songs, Greatest Hits ARPA. Editora de Ideas was named Publisher of the Year. The star-studded awards ceremony included live performances by regional Mexican stars Voz de Mando, Spanish superstar Luz Casal and award winning producer/songwriter/performer Draco.
The SESAC Latina YouTube Music Performance Award was presented for the first time ever and the big winner of the night was Korean rapper PSY for his phenomenon hit single “Gangnam Style”, which after only a year, has reached more than 1.6 billion views. Also, included in this category were Samo Parra (Camila) for “De Que Me Sirve La Vida” and Bibi Marín (Reik) for “Creo En Ti.”
Dennis Lord, Executive Vice President of SESAC and J.J. Cheng, Vice President of SESAC Latina made the opening remarks, giving a warm welcome to all the attendees which included some of the most influential personalities in the Latin music industry.
SESAC also presented the Latina Icon Award to Luz Casal in recognition of a career that has achieved worldwide cultural impact. Casal, who also recently received the Latin Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented the award by SESAC’s J.J. Cheng and gave a gracious speech noting her gratitude of receiving such a prestigious award at this point in her career. Billboard’s Executive Director, Latin Content & Programming, Leila Cobo, introduced Casal for her live performance.
Eight SESAC-affiliated composers and publishers earned a total of Eight #1s on the Billboard charts including Jacob Luttrell with his song “Finally Found You” performed by Enrique Iglesias feat. Sammy Adams; Martin Castro y Hernan Soto for “Sin Respiracion” recorded by Banda El Recodo de Don Cruz Lizarraga; Manuel Antonio ‘Papayo’ Corao and Leonardo Edwin Brooks for their hit song “Echa Pa’llá (Manos Pa’rriba)”, performed by Pitbull feat. ‘Papayo’ (Tropical Airplay & Latin Rhythm Airplay); Alma Rosario for “Y Ahora Resulta”, performed by Voz de Mando; Ricardo ‘Ricky’ Muñoz, founding member and vocalist of Intocable, for his song “Te Amo (Para Siempre)” (Regional Mexican Airplay & Latin Airplay); Eden Muñoz, vocalist of Sinaloa’s most prominent group, Calibre 50 and Alfonso Flores Arocha (SACM), for their song “Y Te Vas” recorded by Banda Carnaval.
SESAC Latina’s vast and diverse repertoire of music included this year’s winners range from pop hits by Gilberto ‘Bibi’ Marín with “Creo En Ti” (Reik), to the ‘tribal’ style of América Sierra, Luciano Luna and Jesus Antonio ‘Smoky’ Torres with “Besos Al Aire” (3BallMTY), the urban rhythm of ‘Papayo’ and Leo Brooks with “Echa Pa’lla (Manos Pa’rriba)”, the tropical sounds of Fonseca, singer/songwriter of “Eres Mi Sueño”; and the traditional regional Mexican styles of norteño and banda with songs by Luciano Luna (Noel Torres) “Adivina”, Jose Antonio Barba (Calibre 50) “El Buen Ejemplo” and Jesus Ariel Barreras (La Arrolladora Banda El Limón De René Camacho) “Llamada De Mi Ex” and many more.
Samo, of Mexican pop group Camilia, received two additional awards: In the Radio Performance category for his song “De Que Me Sirve La Vida” and in the TV performance category for his hit single “Solo Por Amor”, theme song for Telemundo’s soap opera Relaciones Peligrosas.
Hector Leon, general manager of Editora de Ideas, was on hand to receive Publisher of the Year honors as was Songwriter of the Year recipient Jesus Ariel Barreras who was also acknowledged for writing Song of the Year for his 18 week #1 smash, “Llamada De Mi Ex”.
