Even pronouncing his name produces quite the chills: Willi Colon.

“El Malo,” as he is known to many within the music industry, got his salsa career going in the mid 1960s. Seems like a long time ago, but the man remains youthful, still.

Many don’t know, but Willie Colon’s an activist, musician, record producer, composer and singer…and one of the best in all of them. The now 63-year-old Nuyorican, born in the South Bronx, New York, to Nuyorican Puerto Rican parents from Puerto Rican grandparents, picked up the trumpet from a young age. And he’s had it ever since.

Over his prominent career, he’s had the opportunity of recording and performing along the likes of Hector Lavoe and Celia Cruz, two of the best in the salsa scene. He’s released over 40 albums, and he’s in the process of finalizing yet another one.

In addition to that, he went on to have many successful collaborations with salsa musicians and singers such as Ismael Miranda and singer-songwriter Rubén Blades, among many others.

He performs tonight at The Conga Room in downtown Los Angeles. Some of the hit songs he could perform tonight include “Idilio,” “La Murga” and “El Malo,” among several other tracks. The man’s long list of tunes is just simply beyond remarkable.
