Janel Parrish and Lindsey Gort as Kill Bill characters in "For the Record: Tarantino" (Rony's Photobooth)
What could be better than seeing a Tarantino film on the big screen? Watching “For the Record: Tarantino” in Hollywood at DBA. “For the Record” is a theatrical concert series that was launched in Loz Feliz in 2011 and is now on its eighth show. Created by Shane Scheel and Christopher Lloyd Bratten, “For the Record” reinvents cabaret for a new generation with productions that blend movies and music.
Scheel and Bratten, along with director Anderson Davis, present the latest show in the series, “For the Record: Tarantino,” highlighting the heroes of Quentin Tarantino’s iconic movies. A mash-up of Tarantino-directed films is brought to life through the classic soundtracks of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.
“For the Record: Tarantino” began its run with six performances at the beginning of May. After several sold-out weeks, the number of weekly performances was increased and the show moved to DBA Hollywood to accommodate larger crowds. “For the Record: Tarantino” instantly established itself as the hot ticket in town, and now has a 10-week extension through July 26. It’s a show that continues to thrive and evolve because of its fans.
The move to DBA definitely fits the bill, creating a unique and congenial atmosphere. No seat in the venue is a bad seat, as DBA offers completely unobstructed views, impeccable sound and lights, as well as a cocktail program that was crafted specifically for the production by esteemed mixologists Dave Kaplan and Alex Day of Proprietors LLC (co-owners of Honeycut and New York’s famed Death & Co). In addition to great drinks, the gourmet popcorn and snacks give you a familiar sense of being at the movies, only with the exception that while waiting for the show to start instead of credits there is a live DJ spinning. Setting the mood and adding to the ambience of the venue, DJ Andrew Hathaway (Hathbanger) fuses classic tunes with new beats while you mingle before the show.
“For The Record: Tarantino” features an ensemble of L.A. talent composed of movie and TV stars, Broadway alums and indie recording artists. The cast features Rumer Willis, Death Proof star Tracie Thoms, Janel Parrish (“Pretty Little Liars”), Lindsay Pearce (“Glee”), Lindsey Gort (“The Carrie Diaries”), Ginifer King (“Haunted Hathaways,” “Gypsy”), Rhett George (“Wicked,” “Memphis”), Reign Morten (“General Hospital”), Constantine Rousouli (“Wicked”), Patrick Mulvey (“Billy Elliot”), Rogelio Douglas Jr. (“In the Heights”), Corbin Reid (“American Idiot”), Joanna Jones, Danielle Truitt, Maiya Sykes, Laura Sperazza, Dionne Gipson, Jason Paige, James Byous, Ciaran McCarthy and Steve Mazurek.
This show really has it all. Great performers, venue and culture, where you are encouraged to hoot and holler in the crowd if you like something. Perfomances have already attracted thousands of people, including Tarantino, Bruce Willis, Aaron Paul, Barbra Streisand, James Brolin and Demi Moore, just to name a few.
There are guns, swords and a little blood in fight scenes choreographed by J.David Brimmer. The show also features choreography by longtime Broadway performer Justin Bohon to which some light interaction with the crowd is incorporated – and in which my purse was searched by one of the actors as part of the scene! In addition to the live band and exceptional lighting by two-time Emmy Award winner Travis Hagenbuch and art direction by Emmy Award winner Matthew Steinbrenner, the whole production was complete and possible because of the soundtrack and the talent that came together to create this mind-blowing rock ‘n’ roll concert journey. Of course, it’s also thanks to the mind of one of today’s most prolific filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino.
