The age-old question, are you born gay or is it a decision?

That was the struggle John [Patrick Stafford[, the man in the middle of another man and a woman, faced throughout the showing of “Cock” by Mark Bartlett at the Rogue Machine Theatre. “Cock” is an Olivier Award-Winning play and is making its Los Angeles Debut.

In a small round venue, M [Matthew Elkins] W [Rebecca Mozo] squared off for the heart of a confused man, a man trying to find who he really is.

The RMT is something different than your usual theatre, all concessions are by donations and it is home to two different stages.

I can easily insert a bunch of immature sexual jokes in this article, but I’m going to keep it rather informative.

Based in London, the play starts off with John and M trying to fix their relationship. M is a very aggressive, passionate and demanding individual, the complete opposite of poor John.

John feels trapped inside this relationship but feels he can never leave. He comes home one day, after a recent split with M, to inform him there is someone else. That someone else threw M for a twist, it wasn’t a man.
John has seen W on the tube and after his first sexual experience with a woman, he starts to fall in love with her.

After John tells M about W, M invites W over to dinner. Along with his father, F.

When the four meet, the ensuing dialogue explodes into a fight for the heart of John. Bribery, guilt-trips and about anything else you can throw into the mind of a confused individual. John is forced to make a choice.

Who is he really? Is he gay? Is he bi-sexual? Is he straight?

Are people born with a sexuality or is it something you develop throughout your years?

Don’t look to me for answers, the production certainly didn’t give me any.

What I do know, if you’re looking for actors that get you emotionally invested in their characters and a venue that makes you feel part of the performance, you need to go see “Cock” at the RMT.

With RMT being so close to The Grove and the Original Farmers Market, this venue sets up for the perfect date night.

Everyone in the audience loved “Cock,” and I know you will too.
