If audience members weren’t already fans, they were by the end of Miguel’s performance.
Fans had patiently been waiting for Miguel’s sophomore album for almost four years. With so much success from his first album, Kaleidoscope Dream, the long wait was finally over on June 29 when the much- anticipated Wildheart was finally ready and available to the public.
Sonos Studios and Pandora held an intimate showcase last night called An Evening with Miguel. The audience turnout was at their 250-person capacity, which sounds like a large number, however the space felt cozy. The scheduled start time was 8 p.m., but Miguel and his band were fashionably late with a start time of 9:15 p.m.
Once the band and Miguel finally hit the stage, it was instant energy. Miguel is a consummate performer and had a way of making every person in that room feel like they were being sung to. He performed some classic hits from his debut album and new songs from Wildheart to screaming fans. “Coffee,” “Waves” and “Hollywood Dreams,” which pays homage to his hometown of Los Angeles, Calif. Also, during the song “Coffee,” the video played in the background on a giant curtain giving an ethereal feel.
Miguel opened up and shared personal anecdotes about some of the songs and what he was going through at the time he was creating them. You could genuinely see the love and time that went into his latest album. He was authentic and sung his heart out.
Sonos Studios is especially a great and unique place to showcase talent because it is acoustically designed for music. It insulates and amplifies all at the same time. This could not have been a better match up for his voice. Miguel got the crowd moving and made intense eye contact with the audience creating new fans for sure. He showed his sexy side lifting his shirt from time to time exposing his ripped abs and gyrating on the floor! This sounds like these actions could result in a cheesy outcome, yet Miguel has a very similar charm to Prince, making the ladies and men swoon.
He performed for an hour and ended with his classic hit “Adorn” from his debut album. He got the crowd singing along and grooving all in unison. Such positive and sincere energy when relating to the audience. If you weren’t a Miguel fan before stepping into this space, he made sure to make a convert out of you.
