Witness Ramón Ayala’s artistry on the accordion at the Greek Theatre Aug. 22.
The “King of the Accordion,” Ramón Ayala, performs at the Greek Theatre for the first time on Aug. 22 as part of his the Return of the King Tour.
With an illustrious career spanning five decades, Ayala remains stronger than ever and is one of the few regional Mexican music artists who can consistently sell out shows both in Mexico and the United States.
Ayala held a press conference in Los Angeles to discuss the upcoming performance, as well as to officially announce his new brand of tequila called Tragos Amargos.
“We’re very excited to be playing [the Greek Theatre] for the first time. We’re looking to share our music with our fans like we usually do, and also Ramon Ayala Jr. will be singing with us,” he shares. “We’ll also be singing songs by the late Cornelio Reyna, a dear friend whom I started with in 1963. It’s shaping up to be a beautiful show that the fans will enjoy, as they usually do.”
When discussing Tragos Amargos, Ayala expresses how his fans tend to like a drink or two, and that it would also serve as a souvenir.
“Everything about the way this tequila was crafted is extremely detailed, from the shape of the bottle to the cork and, of course, the drink itself,” he says. “The white is very smooth, and the aged flavor is constantly compared to cognac. It’s very well-made, and we expect it to do very well. It also doesn’t give you a wicked hangover the morning after.”
Despite his 112 albums, Ayala shows no signs of slowing down. His latest project contains 12 original tracks. He’s also planning on recording an album with Paquita la del Barrio in which each song will be a response to the other’s previous song. He’s also collaborating on his son’s projects.
His contributions to music are well chronicled, and he has won numerous awards internationally. He even has his own day, Ramon Ayala Day, in Austin, Texas every 15th of May.
