Maximiliano Hernández is Jaspet Sitwell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, now in theaters. (Disney/Marvel)
Marvel Studio’s first release of the year, Captain America: The Winter Soilder, is arriving in theatres this Friday. After 2012’s The Avengers, the Marvel saga continues, and this time, it’s Captain America’s turn.
The film will pick up after the showdown in New York in the present day. Bucky, Captain America’s friend, becomes amnesic after a near-death experience, and becomes a dangerous assassin in the process. It’s up to Captain America to bring him back before it’s too late.
In an exclusive with Living Out Loud, star Maximiliano Hernandez discusses his reprisal of the role of Jasper Sitwell, and his experiences being a part of such an enormous film franchise.
Living Out Loud: What are the expectations for this film at the box office and with the public?
Maximiliano Hernandez: Honestly, I think it’s the most serious film in the Marvel franchise. What I like the most is that even though it’s a super hero movie, it’s not filled with too many special effects. It’s more of a detective story. It’s got a totally different feel from The Avengers and I think audiences will like that. And yes, I expect it to make a great deal of money when it’s released.
LOL: Personally, what did you enjoy the most from making this film?
MH: I enjoyed that this film is made up of a lot of integral characters, it’s not completely just about Captain America. It’s all about surveillance, and it touches on social issues we’re living through now, such as phone espionage.
LOL: Tell us more about these differences between your new film and The Avengers.
MH: Less special effects, no aliens or enormous wormhole. This one is more simple and different, and I really think people will be able to connect with it.
LOL: Tell us about your character.
MH: Jasper Sitwell is a man who has heard so many secrets, that he doesn’t really know what’s real and what isn’t. He doesn’t know who he can trust. He’s also been through a lot, especially with the death of Agent Coulson, and so now he feels alone, isolated. This movie is special because in the past, my character was only seen in small roles. Now, you will get to see him in a new light, and people will come to know who Jasper Sitwell is.
LOL: Were you a fan before you began doing the movies?
MH: I’ve always been fascinated by Captain America but my favorite has always been the Hulk. Still, I admire Captain America because of how genuinely honest and humble he is. He’s got a very stern sense of what’s right and wrong. All he wants to do is help people.
LOL: Did you ever see yourself being a part of such a huge franchise?
MH: Never. I’ve been a comic book fans since I was a kid, and this still seems surreal to me.
LOL: Out of all the films you’ve been in, which is your favorite? And do you think the Captain America film will open more doors for you in Hollywood?
MH: I would say The Warrior with Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy. I’ve always liked it, it just wasn’t seen by many people. It came out a couple years ago. Nick was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. Also, a great friend of mine directed it, and I know how much he put into the project. So that film will always be close to my heart. As far as Captain America, yes, I feel this is my big break.
