The LA Galaxy officially announced today that the club has signed defender Todd Dunivant to a new, multi-year contract. A four-time MLS Cup winner, Dunivant rejoined the Galaxy in 2009 and has been a central figure in the club’s resurgence over the past five years, appearing in 138 regular season games and 16 postseason games in that time. No Galaxy player has appeared in more regular season games than Dunivant over the past five seasons, while he also served as the club captain five times during the 2013 MLS regular season. Per club and league policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.
An 11-year MLS veteran, Dunivant has appeared in 272 regular season games, scoring seven times and adding 21 assists, since being selected by the San Jose Earthquakes in the first round of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. After two seasons with the Earthquakes, Dunivant originally joined the Galaxy ahead of the start of the 2005 season and appeared in all 32 of the club’s regular season games that year before being traded to the New York Red Bulls in June 2006. He split the 2007 season between the Red Bulls and Toronto FC before returning to the Galaxy ahead of the start of the 2009 campaign. He has appeared in at least 25 regular season games in each of the last five years, including the 2011 season when he tied a career-high by starting 32 games and playing the full 90 minutes in each of them.
In six and a half seasons with the Galaxy, Dunivant has four goals and 14 assists in 183 regular season games, starting all but one of them. The 32-year-old is currently tied with Peter Vagenas for sixth place in games played in Galaxy history and tied with Greg Vanney for fifth place in games started with the club. He has registered at least two assists in four of the last five years with the club and tied a career-best with two goals during the 2012 regular season. In the recently completed 2013 campaign, Dunivant appeared in and started 32 games in all competitions, playing in 27 MLS regular season and postseason matches as well as five games in the CONCACAF Champions League. Last week against Real Salt Lake, Dunivant became the 11th player in Galaxy history to appear in at least 20 postseason games.
