Jim Breuer in action. (Kelly Hartmann)
Jim Breuer is one of those comedians you just can’t help but like.
Not only is Breuer funny and charming, but there is a sweet sincerity that can not be faked.
Beginning his career over 20 years ago, he is most often remembered as the tie dye wearing stoner in Half Baked and as Goat Boy on “Saturday Night Live.” His sleepy eyes, paired with his role in the stoner comedy, has given him the reputation of a dazed pothead, yet his autobiography I’m Not High: (But I’ve Got a Lot of Crazy Stories about Life as a Goat Boy, a Dad, and a Spiritual Warrior) begs to differ.
He is a family man. His stand-up focuses heavily on being a parent and taking care of his own father. Through the comical tales of his wife and three daughters, in both his memoir and on stage, you get the feeling of just how grounded and genuine he is. This is most apparent in his documentary More Than Me, which follows him and his 85-year-old father on the 2008 “Breuniversity Tour.”
The documentary chronicles the strengthening of their relationship while Breuer cares fore his elderly father. His two other stand-up specials, “Lets Clear the Air” and “And Laughter for All” have both received critical acclaim as well as raving reviews from fans all while keeping the content clean.
I would also like to recommend listening to the personal and intriguing interview he gave to Marc Maron on the WTF podcast. The interview will show you a side of Breuer’s life that I, at least, never would have guessed he would have experienced.
You may find Breuer on his weekly Sirius/XM Radio show “Fridays with Breuer.” But it’s best to catch him on Thursday, April 10, at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.
