To some, she remains an actress and dancer who got her start in acting on the Disney Channel. But to many, she’s a rising Latin film star.
Regardless of where you know her from, 22-year-old Colombian-American Sofia Carson is an unbelievably beautiful, charming, intelligent and talented young adult who stars as Evie in the Disney Channel’s original movie Descendants, which premieres tonight.
Evie is the daughter of the Evil Queen (from Snow White), who is played by comedian Kathy Najimy. This role suits Carson perfectly; she admits there are similarities between the character Evie and herself in real life.
“What matters most in life is not how we look in the mirror but how we are inside and loving that, accepting our weirdness,” she says. “Evie is such a fashionista. I’m obsessed with fashion, so I love that about her.”
Kristin Chenoweth (as Maleficent), Cameron Boyce (as Carlos), Booboo Stewart (as Jay), Dove Cameron (as Mal) and others also star in this adventurous musical comedy that includes kids of Disney heroes and villains. All in all, lots of magical stuff was involved.
“I’m not sure if that really exists, but it’s oftentimes nice to believe in such things,” says Carson.
Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega, who helmed High School Musical, directs Descendants.
Carson, who signed a music contract with BMI in 2012, has enjoyed the arts of singing and dancing since age 3. She is able to show off these talents in Descendants, as well as proving to be a solid actor.
“I’ve always dreamt of that. For me it’s not hard at all. It’s actually been an honor to do work for [Disney Channel], and I feel very honored because there is so much talent out there,” says Carson when asked if she felt pressured of working for such a big entity. “It’s just such a beautiful company [that makes films] with nice messages.”
Carson got her start in acting on the Disney Channel series “Austin & Ally” in 2014 and later continued her work with “Faking It” on MTV. She’s also been cast for Disney Channel’s Further Adventures in Babysitting, due in 2016.
Interestingly enough, Carson is now a college student earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in Communications at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is fluent in Spanish, English and French. Carson is also a huge fan of Shakira, an artist that she has met before.
“At the age of 18 I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams and also study at UCLA,” she says. “I just focused on singing at first, but then I began going to [acting] auditions.”
After numerous auditions on a daily basis for over a year, she got the role of Evie.
“It changed my life,” she says. “It’s a dream come true, and every day I wake up and do what I love – what I’ve always wanted to do.”
Descendants premieres July 31 at 8 p.m. on Disney Channel.
