Their album La noche eterna. Los días no vividos. reached number 1 in 2012.
On March 27, 2021, the band held the first large-scale concert in Spain as a test of reducing restrictions on large gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an exclusive interview with LOL-LA.com, Balmes discusses various subjects such as the band’s artistic name, their song “El sur” featuring Bunbury and upcoming plans, among other things.
Living Out Loud LA: How do you classify your music and what inspires you?
Santi Balmes: Music that tries to narrate the day to day of our lives. We are inspired by anything, even in an incomprehensible way, without it being necessary for that spark to correspond to a very transcendent life event. There is a point of randomness in this of inspiration.
LOL-LA: I really like the stage name … can you elaborate on how the band came to be named like that?
SB: Days before the name came up, I had left a band in which I was very frustrated. Really “love of lesbian” was the name of an imaginary band. The name was a kind of shot in the rational hemisphere. It meant breaking the mold.
LOL-LA: I love “Irrompibles” … what can you tell me about the lyrics?
SB: It talks about getting ahead, despite everything and everyone. Of those people with an oppressive mentality that hinder the social and emotional advancement of each one of us. The unbreakable exist “despite” them, or adverse circumstances. It is a song of encouragement towards oneself.
LOL-LA: The collaboration with Bunbury in “El sur”… how divine! how was that experience for you?
SB: Great, professionally and personally. Full of respect and admiration. You could say that we made the song thinking about his contribution, so his particular lyrical worlds and ours are in a border area that is “El sur”.
LOL-LA: The album VEHN is great … what was the most complicated thing for you in the process of making the album become a reality?
SB: The circumstances were by no means easy. There were 3 outages due to the pandemic. However, due to those pauses, we had time to reflect, modify letters or structures. From that bad moment we extract another way of creating.
LOL-LA: What’s on your agenda for this rest of 2021?
SB: I will summarize it for you. Work twice as hard to earn the same as other years.
LOL-LA: Anything else to add?
SB: Nothing else, except that it gives me the feeling that this pandemic is the prologue to a problem that we will have to deal with in a radical way and with the involvement of all. Global warming. It is already so evident that it seems incredible to me that there are people who continue to look the other way. Many aspects of the economy that we know will have to change, yes or yes. And our attitude.
VEHN is now available.
