“We wear short shorts.” Whenever I see a guy wearing a pair of Cabana Bro Shorts, the Royal Teens’ hit song from the 1950s pops into my head. While the classic tune originally referred to the cutoff jean shorts teenage girls danced around in during the era, a dude who is confident enough in his own skin to wear Cabana Bro’s attention-grabbing swim trunks is all man, indeed.
Taking inspiration from beach volleyball legend Karch Kiraly (who habitually donned a pair of short shorts with his trademark neon pink hat), David Hasselhoff in his bright red “Baywatch” uniform and A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez) showing off his wrestler’s thighs on “Saved by the Bell,” the SoCal clothing brand strives to bring classic-length trunks back into the forefront of swimwear.
Not only is each pair of Cabana Bro shorts cut with a 5-inch inseam to give those toned thighs the spotlight they deserve – I mean, why else do you spend all those hours running in Runyon Canyon? – they come in retro-inspired patterns that any guy would love. From stripes (the PB&Jays, the Point Breaks), plaids (the Markelberrys, the 5th Year Seniors) and polkadots (the Dot Bombs, the Showboaters) to wacky patterns (the Frat Glasses) and more traditional solids (the Magnum P.I.N.K.S, the Mitchell Goosens), the designs are offered in an array of bright colors that are sure to make any beach bunny’s head turn.
My favorite design is the Classics. Featuring a wide dark blue strip at the top, and alternating white and royal blue thinner stripes before coming to a solid band of aqua blue at the upper thigh area, these shorts can be paired with many T-shirt/hoodie styles and colors and worn almost anywhere a day in SoCal might take you. Let’s face it, most Angelenos not only wear swim trunks for taking a dip, shorts are a permanent fixture to their wardrobes for every season. What makes Cabana Bro swim trunks so great is that they’re not only aesthetically pleasing, they’re comfortable enough to wear to your morning class, out to lunch with your homies and, of course, to your next pool party or Labor Day barbecue.
As the Cabana Bros are apt to remind all of us Angelenos, just put on a pair of their swim trunks, “hop on the party bus and let your thighs high five!”
