Don't miss your chance to see Kinky July 18 at the Reventón Super Estrella at Staples Center.
Sorry, we aren’t talking about that kind of kinky. Get your mind out of the gutter! We mean Kinky, the band, of course.
Hailing from Monterrey, Mexico, the quintet (who on May 20, 2015 performed at Double Door in Chicago) formed in 1998 and has been rocking out ever since. If you’ve never heard the name, chances are you’ve heard their music at least once.
Their self-titled debut was released in early 2002 and became a success in Latin America. From that album came their most recognized song, “Más.” Side note: That song alone has been featured in numerous commercials including one for Nissan, the NBC mini-series “Kingpin” and the films Thirteen and Man on Fire.
Made up of members Gilberto Cerezo, Ulises Lozano, Carlos Chairez, Omar Góngora and Cesar Pliego, the band has been nominated for eight Latin Grammy awards in categories that include Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Song.
Listed below are a handful of reasons as to why we’re fans of the band. You can thank us later.
Breaking the Language Barrier: Yes, the majority of their lyrics are in Spanish. That being said, it doesn’t matter. Whether you speak it or not, you’ll enjoy their tunes. Not only will you enjoy their upbeat music, it’s so catchy it will get stuck in your head. If you don’t know the language, chances are you’ll pick some of it up as you try to sing along.
They’ll Keep You Moving: You can’t listen to Kinky and not want to dance. It just isn’t possible. Their alternative, electronic sound is fused with some good-old funk. Check out their song “A Donde Van Los Muertos” or “León” to see/hear what we mean. You can thank us now. If you’re in a bad mood, quick, look up this song. We promise, you’ll feel better immediately.
Hello, Awesome Stage Presence: Whether you get a chance to see them live in concert or check out their performances on YouTube, you can’t deny the band has some serious energy. They take over the stage and (see reason No. 4) will make you want to move. Frankly, they’re aesthetically pleasing to watch. The easy-going vibes transcending through them is enough to get you hooked.
MTV Unplugged Album: Recorded live in Mexico City, the acoustic set consists of tracks from their five studio albums. Changing up the musical arrangements, the band took the songs to new levels. Sure, they did the usual acoustic thing, but they also used toy guns, trash cans and bicycle wheels as sound effects. As if that wasn’t awesome enough, they also used accordions. Typically, I’m not impressed or even intrigued by this instrument, but these guys changed that. The album debuted at No. 1 on iTunes Latino.
Their Music Is Everywhere: Like we mentioned earlier, it’s possible and highly likely that you aren’t familiar with the band, but you have heard their music. Trust us. They’ve been featured on various soundtracks, including Jorge Gutierrez’s The Book of Life, as well as the TV shows “Nip/Tuck,” “Weeds” and a personal favorite, “Gossip Girl.” They’ve also had music featured in video games such as EA Sports’ “FIFA.”
Kinky is sure to leave you “queriendo más y más.” See what we did there? Clever.
