Coconut oil has quickly become the beauty cure-all du jour. Almost every Pinterest pin is either about the many uses of this oil or raving about how great this oil is as far as health benefits. I have to admit, last week I ran out to my local health food store to see what all the fuss was about. Walking around the store I made my way to the coconut oil aisle, yes aisle. One little aisle completely dedicated to this new cure all.

Now, as most of you beauty lovers know, a couple of years ago everything was about argan oil or Moroccan oil. I took my little nine-dollar jar home – no, folks, this stuff isn’t cheap – and immediately began trying this gift from Mother Earth. Here are some uses for coconut oil.

Oil Pulling – This is a process of swishing edible oil, such as coconut oil, around the mouth for between 10 and 20 minutes, ideally upon awakening, for detoxification purposes. Its origins lie in the Ayurveda, the ancient healing system of India, and countless people from all backgrounds swear by it. I heard about this from a relative and was instantly intrigued but haven’t had the pleasure of trying it yet.

Makeup Remover – Ever experience mascara that never comes off? I have, and let me tell you, this is the worst. Apply a little dab of coconut oil directly on your lashes and rub a bit. You’ll see, it works wonders. Just like classic cold creams in the 1950s, this oil works miracles while removing pesky waterproof mascara and nourishing lashes to make then grow longer.

Moisturizer – Contrary to popular belief, applying oil to your naturally oily face will not make it oilier! As many beauty experts have seen, Josie Maran’s Argan Oil has proven that it significantly reduces a pore’s ability to produce more oil. Taking this into consideration, and being the perfect candidate to try this out, I immediately applied coconut oil to my face when I got home. This made me a believer. I do this beauty ritual about three times a week, right before bedtime. My skin is more radiant, and I haven’t experienced any breakouts. You can also apply coconut oil to your whole body; it’s recommended to use one part coconut oil and one part regular body lotion. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
