A Border Grill Truck and Monterey Fresh Farm Stand served complimentary tacos on Wednesday, May 28 at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, Calif. The free samples of the signature Monterey Fresh Taco took everyone who ate them by storm; they were loved by all.
“It’s fresh, tasty and very unique,” commented a nearby taster.
Monterey, Calif. chefs Yousef Ghalaini of the Bench at Pebble Beach and Tim Wood of Carmel Valley Ranch prepared the tacos. Each Monterey Fresh Taco was comprised of locally sourced, sustainably grown ingredients from Swank Farms in Monterey. As the cooked, Ghalaini and Wood took time to explain the process to those present at the Monterey Fresh Farm Stand.
Border Grill chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, who have both competed on “Top Chef Masters,” were also present. They greeted the public, posed for photos and encouraged everyone to eat some tacos.
Over 100 tacos were served, and each contained Monterey Gilroy garlic braised portobello, honey garden cabbage, pickled torpedo onion and parsnip chips. The ingredients were wrapped in masa tortillas, which were handmade from fresh-milled local corn, then topped with chipotle crema.
From May 19 through 23, the two Border Grill Trucks offered the Monterey Fresh Taco at various locations throughout the city. For every taco sold, 20 percent of the proceeds were donated to Share Our Strength, their No Kid Hungry campaign that aims to end childhood hunger in America.
