Our team was able to save the world with four minutes left on the clock.

Like any J.J. Abrams-related movie shrouded in mystery, Living Out Loud – Los Angeles received an invitation to participate in an escape room challenge on behalf of 10 Cloverfield Lane. The sequel to the 2008 film produced by Abrams and directed by Matt Reeves is helmed by up-and-coming talent Dan Trachtenberg.

10 Cloverfield Lane, which releases in theaters March 11, centers around a bunker that Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) tries to get out of when a mysterious monster roams the city. The film also stars John Goodman as an overprotective figure who tries to stop the girl from getting away. But you’re left to wonder what’s scarier: what lurks outside or within.

The folks who represent the film hosted a fun hour to celebrate its upcoming release in one of the city’s best interactive attractions: RoomEscape LA. Now while, the escape room was not themed for the film specifically, we got a chance to experience the original bunker room that started the escape room craze in the city. Along with a number of select press, we were able to get the real feel for what it’s like to be trapped in a bunker.

Our objective was to stop a crazed spy’s plan to bomb the world after his suicide and find the right switches to save the world. The experience is not something you can do on your own, you need a team. There are riddles, number clues, concealed hints, math and hands-on building to stop the evil plan. Oh and there’s a timer, so if you’re taking a while to get through each step, you can very well fail. We got lucky in a group that contributed cleverness, brains, steady hands and quick thinking. We saved the world with four minutes left on the clock.

If you want to participate in fun activities with friends outside of just digital interaction, RoomEscape LA is a fantastic option with rooms that are all themed. You can participate in a bank robbery heist, a jailbreak, zombie apocalypse and a Dracula room (coming soon). The bunker room is the first one they made and also very appropriate to do before or after a screening of 10 Cloverfield Lane.
