Memorial Day has different meanings to different people. To some, it signifies the unofficial beginning of summer, while to others it may mean graduation season is upon us.
In the world of movies, it means the beginning of summer blockbuster season, and whichever film kicks off that season sometimes sets the tone for what’s to come the rest of the summer and whether Hollywood deserves your hard-earned dollars.
Disney’s Tomorrowland will tee off this year’s blockbuster season. Starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer and with a budget of just under $200 million (not to mention it’s under the Disney banner), there’s reason to have high hopes for this sci-fi adventure.
Here are five reasons why you should see Disney’s Tomorrowland:
5. Because We’ve All Been on the Ride
Whether you’ve been to the Disneyland locally, Magic Kingdom in Orlando or have been lucky enough to have been to a Disney theme park abroad, most people in the Los Angeles area have been to some version of Tomorrowland. It’ll be interesting to see how much this film (sorry, no spoilers here…you’ll have to see the movie to find out) sticks to the idea behind the ride. Also, we all like a little nostalgia.
4. Walt Disney’s Brainchild
Walt Disney was a man known for his futurist outlook. He was a one-of-a-kind visionary whose imagination had no bounds. His extraordinary vision for Tomorrowland has been interpreted by Brad Bird (writer, producer) and Damon Lindelof (writer) and put into two hours of film. Disney is known as one of the most influential people in the 20th century and the idea for this film was born from his mind. That alone is a good reason to hit the theater this weekend.
3. It’s Ambitious
Even if this isn’t the type of groundbreaking film Gravity (the 2013 outer space thriller starring Clooney and Sandra Bullock) was, this film sets its sights high because that is what Disney does. Although not everything under the Disney banner isn’t suited for everyone, if there is one thing every Disney movie has in common is that they never pull any stops and they’re as ambitious as any other film there is.
2. Because It’s the Best Thing To Do Memorial Day
Memorial Day is synonymous with family time. What better way than to hang with your family all weekend and go hit the theater afterward? This movie is tailor-made for families to go watch together, and watching Disney movies as a family is always a memorable experience. For example, I can’t remember what I did two days ago, but I vividly remember every detail of watching The Lion King as a five-year old.
1. George Clooney
Co-starring with the young Robertson, who plays Casey Newton, a teen full of curiosity and hungry for adventure, Clooney plays the part of “a former boy genius inventor jaded by disillusionment.” It is Casey’s contagious curiosity that reinvigorates Clooney’s character to search for the secrets of Tomorrowland, which is when the adventure begins. Clooney is perfectly suited for this type of role and provides a little something for everyone to enjoy.
Tomorrowland is now playing in theaters.
